Acushnet Avenue Great Neighborhoods
CEDC is part of the revitalization efforts on the Acushnet Avenue Commercial Corridor to help create a safe and vibrant place to live, work and discover. CEDC is a part of a network of communities affiliated with the Mass Smart Growth Alliance Great Neighborhoods partnership.
Great Neighborhoods are active, environmentally friendly and welcoming places where community and business leaders, residents, and public officials work together to create affordable homes, job-generating offices and stores, and recreational spaces close to public transportation. Residents are able to spend more time interacting with neighbors, biking or walking and less time commuting.
As part of this process, CEDC engaged a broad cross-section of business, government and community stakeholders in neighborhood gatherings in the early 2014. These gatherings identified problems in the neighborhood and generated ideas for solutions to improve life for residents, businesses and visitors on Acushnet Ave. Several Action Projects emerged from our discussions to support the existing redesign of the Acushnet Ave. streetscape to a more people-centered place to live and work as well as an exciting destination to enjoy the shops, restaurants and cafes of New Bedford’s International Marketplace.
These Great Neighborhoods efforts are creating Action Projects that involve and engage the neighborhood to keep up the positive momentum including:
- Neighborhood Clean-Ups
- Storefront Pride Clean-Up and Beautification
- Public Art- Community Mural
- Public Art- Vacant Storefront Photography Exhibit
- Shining Light on the Crime Problem
- Mapping Crime Hot Spots
- Youth and Placemaking with Mass in Motion
